A recent American study reveals the relationship between certain foods and men's infection with fierce types of prostate cancer.. What are the results?

A recent US study indicated that men with prostate cancer may be more susceptible to more severe forms of the disease if their diet contains a lot of fat in meat and dairy products.

The researchers said in the study, published in the Journal of Cancer and Prostate Diseases, that the increased risk is linked to saturated fats and cholesterol, which prostate cancer patients do not take medications to reduce their levels.

The study also concluded that the link between a diet high in saturated fat and the severity of prostate cancer is stronger in men of European descent than in African Americans.

"A diet that contains a lot of saturated fat contributes to higher levels of cholesterol in the blood," said lead study author Emma Allot of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which has already been linked to worse developments in prostate cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in every 7 men in the United States is diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The researchers pointed out that the disease is more common in Western countries, where people usually also tend to consume foods that contain higher proportions of saturated fat.

To explore the relationship between prostate cancer and dietary fat, the study team used data from 1,854 men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, of whom 321 or 17% had "very aggressive" cancers.

As part of a joint research project on prostate cancer between North Carolina and Louisiana, the men in the study answered questions about their dietary habits, medications, and other demographic and lifestyle factors such as age, race, and activities.

The researchers calculated the levels of saturated fats in each man's diet, as well as the amounts of unsaturated fats, which are types found in vegetable oils and fish.

The researchers found that men with more aggressive degrees of prostate cancer eat food that contains more calories and cholesterol daily and have a higher proportion of those calories resulting from the intake of fats in their diets.

Among the men with more severe degrees of the disease, a greater proportion of their total fat intake was saturated than among men with less severe disease.

And diets that contain high levels of saturated fats have been linked to a 51% higher risk of severe cancer. A separate relationship was also shown between cholesterol levels and increased risk, but only in white men.
