American and Indian scientists conducted a recent study in which they demonstrated that the natural compound phencol can help protect the brain from Alzheimer's disease.
Scientists confirmed the availability of this compound in basil leaves, according to the results of the research published in the electronic journal Science Daily.
The article explains that phencol is able to reduce the level of neurotoxicity in the brain, and the researchers confirmed that the medicinal effect of the herb is due to the mechanisms that affect the gut microbiome.
Experts have studied the interaction at the molecular level between the brain and the gut, and tried to determine how this might affect brain health and cognitive decline.
After analyzing 144,000 natural compounds, researchers found that phencol, the plant-derived compound that gives basil its aromatic scent, is best at stimulating a specific receptor, which in turn prevents the buildup of toxic beta-amyloid compounds in the brain.
Earlier, researchers from the United Kingdom developed a new method of passive measurement of brain activity, which allows detecting Alzheimer's disease in the early stages in the "Fastball" test, which was developed by scientists at the universities of Bath, Bristol and Kent.
