The German Society of Internal Medicine said that upper abdominal pain has many serious causes.
She added that the most prominent causes are ulcers such as stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers, and infections such as cholecystitis, pancreatitis and inflammation of the stomach lining.
The association explained that other possible causes of upper abdominal pain include irritable bowel, gallstones, liver disease (cirrhosis or jaundice) or heart disease (angina or heart attack).
In any case, upper abdominal pain requires a doctor’s urgent consultation, in order to determine the real cause behind it and treat it in a timely manner, especially if it is severe and accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, inability to urinate or defecate, shortness of breath and pain in the chest.
